The Origin of Pop Music

Pop music (a term originally derived from the abbreviation of "popular") is a musical genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the 1950s, derived from the rock and roll. The terms of popular music and pop music are often used interchangeably, although the former is a description of the popular music (and can include any style), while the latter is a particular genre that contains quality mass appeal.

As a genre, pop music is very eclectic, often borrowed elements from other styles including urban, dance, rock, Latin and country; Pop music is generally regarded as a commercial genre recorded and the desire to have a mass audience appeal.

Definition

David Hatch and Stephen Millward define pop music as "a body of music the which is distinguishable from popular, jazz and folk musics" (body of music that is distinguished from popular music, jazz and folk). Although pop music is often seen as oriented singles, it is not the sum of all the music charts, which always contains songs from a variety of sources, including classical, jazz, Rock, and new songs, while pop music as a genre is usually seen as existing and developed separately. Thus "pop music" can be used to describe a distinct genre, aimed at a youth market, often characterized as a softer alternative to rock and roll.
